About Kyrgyzstan

KYRGYZSTAN is one of the Central Asian countries bordered by Kazakhstan, China, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. It is a mountainous country, 93% of its territory is located at over 1000 meters above sea level. The highest peaks are in the Kakshaal-Too range, forming the Chinese border. Peak Jengish Chokusu, at 7,439 m (24,400 feet), is the highest point and is considered by geologists to be the northernmost peak over 7,000 m (23,000 feet) in the world. Several glaciers in the mountains are the source of many beautiful rivers and lakes. The lake of Issyk-Kul is the largest in Kyrgyzstan and the largest mountain lake in the world second only tor Titicaca. The lake is in the north-eastern Tian-Shan mountains.
The climate of Kyrgyzstan is continental with hot summers and cold winters in the mountain regions. Yet, approximately 247 days a year are sunny.  Kyrgyzstan’s climate is diverse with subtropics in the Fergana valley and semidesert in the Chui and Talas lowlands changing to eternal frost of the mountains. In the valleys, winter is warmer than in the mountains. Because of this, light clothes are appropriate in summer, but in winter, warm clothes are essential.    As a result of its diverse and turbulent history, the country through the centuries has become a melting pot of nationalities. The ethnic group of the Kyrgyz makes up about 75% of the population. The two other important ethnic groups are Russians and Uzbeks, together making 20% of the population. The Russians came to the region during the 19th century. The capital city of Bishkek being only 125 years old is heavily influenced by the Russian way of life and Soviet architecture. The Uzbek people live mostly in the south of the country, close to the border with Uzbekistan. It is necessary to say that the population of Kyrgyzstan comprises more than 80 ethnic groups including the Kyrgyz, Russians, Uzbek, Kazakh, Ukrainians, Uygurs, Dungans, Germans and Koreans, all of them living in friendship.
In general the Kyrgyz are warm, sensitive and friendly people. The features of the Kyrgyz culture are tolerance, hospitality, open-mindedness and flexibility. The people of Kyrgyzstan treat other cultures and nations very well. However, since the Kyrgyz  led nomadic way of life  before the Soviet period they  preserve  their cultural identity and values. Presently, Kyrgyzstan is a democratic republic.
The capital BISHKEK is situated in the Chui lowlands in the north of the country, between the Talas valley in the west and the eastern Issyk-Kul region. It was founded in 1878 and originally was called Pishpek, which is the name of a wooden paddle which the Kyrgyz used to make their kymyz (kumiss – fermented mare’s milk), the national drink. Later, during the Soviet period, it was named Frunze after the famous Russian General Mikhail Frunze. After declaration of Independence in 1991, it was renamed to Bishkek.
The city has been influenced by the Russians from the beginning, and was actually more or less built by them. Most of the buildings you can see today are built in a typically Soviet architectural style,  while the trees in the parks, boulevards and alleys are watered by a system of canals built by people of Bishkek. Those boulevards and parks make this a pleasant city to live in, as they provide much shade in summer, when temperatures sometimes may reach 40 degrees Celsius (105 F), and the open canal system also helps to keep the summer bearable. Bishkek is known to be one of the greenest cities in Central Asia as a result of this planning.
Bishkek as the capital city of Kyrgyzstan has many historical and cultural place to see - buildings, monuments, parks, museums, galleries, theatres and other places that worth visiting..
The climate is continental in the city, which means hot summers and cold winters. The atmosphere is generally dry with rainfall occurring mostly in spring. There is an average of 322 days of sunshine per year. There are two rivers flowing through the city – Alamedin and Ala-Archa both being tributaries of the River of Chui. Also, the Grand Chui Canal flows through the city. The city is said to be the greenest in Central Asia.

The instruction, lab work, lectures and examinations are conducted entirely in English, learning the Russian language (Kyrgyz Republic`s official language) is also mandatory during the first three years of the program. This is an obligation for students to be able to communicate with local people during their practical training.
The first two years of medical school includes an overview of basic science courses. The first year is devoted to general understanding of biological, chemical and physical sciences, obligatory to medical  practice. From the second year the focus progressively narrows down, channeling the studies towards the  biomedical sciences most relevant for  practicing physicians.
Practical training is conducted by hands-on, in-clinic education and pre-graduation internship.
The teaching from the third year onwards, takes place exclusively in clinical settings of university modern facilities including hospitals and involves working with patients admitted for treatment.Clinical studies are, in fact, a check-up of the application of the biomedical sciences mastered during the first two years of medical school.
The last year of medical studies is exclusively for practical purposes. During the last year, students work under the direct guidance of the assistants and instructors with high academic positions at the clinics.
Final assessment of knowledge obtained  by  students after accomplishing their full course of studies is given by the State Inspectorate  of Licensing and Accreditation (Attestation) under Ministry of Education and Science of the Kyrgyz Republic with comprehensive theoretical and practical state examinations.
After the successful completion of the 5-years of academic studies in the Program of medicine, students are awarded  diplomas testifying their completion of higher medical education. Postgraduate program

POSTGRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION (PGME, 3 years) is called a residence program (in Russian-ordinatura).The physicians  study in PGME are called residents (ordinators). Physicians will be trained  in chosen medical specialties with focus on development  of clinical skills and professional competencies.  This learning process  makes physicians ready for independent practice in  chosen medical specialties. PGME programs are conducted  in hospitals or other health care institutions, and  for most specialties,  use both inpatient and ambulatory settings
The primary responsibility of the PGME program is to offer  a well-arranged training program under the guidance and supervision of residents, facilitating their  professional and personal development with  safe and appropriate care for patients. Residents assume  greater responsibility throughout the course of the residency, consistent with individual development  of clinical experience, knowledge and skills.

    Students` life

ISM students are coming from different countries with their own distinct cultures, perspectives, and lifestyles. The main goal of the faculty and administration is to help them to adapt to the new environment. Sometimes simple information about housing, food, shopping, postal and bank services is essential to keep students functioning.
ISM provides opportunity to live in school dormitories  and rent apartments. However, we advise to choose dormitory options for students of the first years of studies. Additional information about housing can be obtained below.
Although modern connection capabilities  highly depend on internet, postal and courier services still remain important. Many courier and postal services are available to transfer documental and non-documental goods. Along with the well-established EMS postal service, others like DHL, Blue Dart have always been available. ISM students can receive any postal correspondence and any other messages delivered to the ISM headquarters, which  dispatch them safely to the concerned.
There are many international and national banks in Bishkek. However, students mainly use their country bank accounts for money transactions through Visa, Maestro or Master debit cards from many ATM scattered all over the city. They can also open personal bank accounts in the banks based in Bishkek to perform necessary transactions. Money transfer systems like Western Union, Money Gram, Migom, and others can help in any kind of money transfer across the world.
We are trying to minimize risk that can affect student’s health and we urge students  to take care of themselves while making their transactions. We require a medical checkup for each student yearly that is conducted in our school. Additional information about health services and emergency situation can be found here.
Residence hall life is an essential aspect of your ISM experience, during your time here, you’ll find fellows who share your interests and some of them will first be your neighbors and roommates to most likely become your lifelong friends. We encourage students to form clubs by interest and provide many opportunities such as joinInternational Student’s Network –TÜNDÜK, ISM Student Community  and attend dance, music classes.
